Supreme Court Gives EC Four Months to Decide TMC Name and Symbol Dispute
The Supreme Court has given the Election Commission four months to take a final decision in the dispute over the Trinamool Congress party name and its traditional election symbol.
the timeline comes amid the dispute between the faction led by Mamata Banerjee and the group led by Ritabrata Banerjee over the party's name and election symbol.
The Election Commission had earlier barred both sides from using the original 'All India Trinamool Congress' name and the traditional 'Flowers and Grass' symbol as an interim arrangement. The Mamata-led faction was allotted the name 'Mamata All India Trinamool Congress' and the 'Football Player' symbol, while the Ritabrata-led faction was allotted 'Democratic Trinamool Congress' and the 'Envelope' symbol.
During an earlier hearing, the Supreme Court had asked the Election Commission to indicate how much time it would need to reach a final decision while giving both sides a fair opportunity to present their evidence. The court had also stressed that the proceedings should not be prolonged indefinitely.
The interim arrangement is also linked to the upcoming Assembly bypolls in Nandigram and Rejinagar.
