Nandigram Congress Candidate Milan Pradhan Remanded to Jail Custody Until October 7
A Kanthi subdivision court has extended the judicial custody of Nandigram Congress candidate Milan Pradhan until October 7. The decision means he will remain in custody on October 6, the scheduled date of the Nandigram by-election.
Pradhan was arrested in connection with an old case linked to the 2007 Nandigram movement. Earlier proceedings had kept him in custody while his legal team sought relief from the courts.
Custody extended until October 7
The latest court order extends the custody period beyond polling day. A separate bail application has also been moved before the Calcutta High Court, and a hearing is expected during the current week, according to reports.
Background to the case
Reports say Pradhan faces cases dating back to the 2007 Nandigram movement. The arrest was made in an old murder case. The state has told the High Court that several other cases for which protection had been sought have been withdrawn.
Nandigram by-election
The Nandigram by-election is scheduled for October 6. The custody order therefore means Pradhan is set to remain in jail on polling day unless a competent court changes the position before then.
The legal proceedings and any subsequent order on bail will determine whether the custody arrangement changes before the election.
