A political controversy has emerged ahead of the Rejinagar Assembly bypoll over a remark made by Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief and MLA Humayun Kabir.

According to The Indian Express Bangla, Kabir, while alleging police action against his party workers and obstruction during campaigning, said at a press conference that he would pray for Suvendu Adhikari to leave the world soon. He also referred to the deaths of several political figures while making the statement.

Kabir had earlier alleged police harassment and arrests of AJUP workers ahead of the Rejinagar bypoll. He had announced that he would stay away from ground-level campaigning and use social media to communicate with voters. The Indian Express noted that his allegations of police bias were not accompanied by specific evidence in his statement.

The remarks drew public criticism from leaders in the ruling camp, with demands for legal action also being raised. The episode has added another point of contention to the political atmosphere surrounding the Rejinagar bypoll.

AJUP has fielded Kabir’s son, Golam Nabi Azad, from Rejinagar. The bypoll is scheduled for October 6, according to The Indian Express.
