BJP national president Nitin Nabin visited Gangasagar on Monday morning during his two-day West Bengal visit. He took a dip at the confluence and offered prayers at the Kapil Muni Ashram.

Nabin was asked about the long-standing demand to accord the Gangasagar Mela the status of a national fair. He said the demand was known to the party and that the issue was under consideration, adding that he hoped it could be fulfilled soon.

Nabin also spoke about the religious importance of Gangasagar. He was accompanied by West Bengal BJP president Shamik Bhattacharya and central observer Sunil Bansal.

After the prayers, Nabin said the BJP would work to maintain the trust placed in it by the people of West Bengal. He also said he prayed for the well-being of the people of the state.

The demand for national-fair status for the Gangasagar Mela has been raised for years. Sangbad Pratidin reported that former chief minister Mamata Banerjee had also raised the demand with the Centre on several occasions.
