Calcutta High Court Maintains Earlier Directions on Three TMC-Linked Bank Accounts
The Calcutta High Court has maintained its earlier directions concerning three bank accounts linked to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), in a case arising from the freezing of the accounts during an ongoing investigation.
The three HDFC Bank accounts at the Central Plaza branch in Kolkata had been debit-frozen after a complaint was lodged with the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station. The Enforcement Directorate later initiated a separate investigation and issued a freezing order covering the same three HDFC accounts, according to court records.
What the court considered
In an earlier order, a coordinate bench had allowed the accounts to be operated for day-to-day and monthly expenses under the supervision of a Special Officer. The court had also noted, at the interim stage, that the complaint appeared to be omnibus and that it was unable to identify specific material that could have formed the basis for the abrupt freezing of the three accounts.
In proceedings on the matter, the court examined the competing submissions of the TMC petitioners and the investigating agencies. The petitioners argued that the freezing action lacked specific identification of proceeds of crime, while the investigating side relied on its investigation and transactions found in the accounts. These are submissions by the respective sides, not findings adopted in this report.
Background to the case
According to the court record, a complaint was lodged on June 18, 2026 alleging that funds arising from alleged unlawful activities had been routed into three HDFC Bank accounts. A police FIR followed the same day. The three accounts were subsequently debit-frozen.
The court record also states that the Enforcement Directorate, during its investigation, examined transactions in the accounts and issued a freezing order on July 7, 2026 under the Prevention of Money-Laundering Act. The legal proceedings over the accounts remain subject to further adjudication.
