Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said she remains committed to returning to Bangladesh by December 2026 and is prepared to face legal consequences, including imprisonment, if she returns.

Hasina made the remarks in an interview. She said she believes she has the right to return to her country and that the key question is how her return can take place in a way that protects the interests of Bangladesh and its citizens. She did not disclose a specific return plan or confirm contact with the Bangladeshi or Indian governments.

Hasina referred to a death sentence handed down by a Bangladeshi tribunal in November 2025. She rejected the verdict as politically motivated and said she was prepared to face any legal process, including imprisonment.

In the interview, Hasina also said she was working to rebuild the Awami League. She said the stated goal was to restore democratic governance and protect the rights and dignity of Bangladeshis.

She also raised concerns about terrorist and extremist networks in Bangladesh and described the issue as one with wider regional implications.
