Public sector banks and Regional Rural Banks will remain open on Sunday, September 27, ahead of the proposed three-day nationwide bank strike from September 28 to 30.

The decision comes after the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) called for a nationwide strike from Monday, September 28, through Wednesday, September 30. September 26 is the fourth Saturday, which is normally a bank holiday.

The Ministry of Finance said the Sunday opening is intended to prevent banking services from being disrupted for an extended period because of the weekend holidays followed by the proposed strike.

The Reserve Bank of India has approved the continued operation of bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests on September 27, according to the government statement.

The proposed strike has been called by bank employee and officer organisations over demands including a five-day banking week and other service and pension-related issues.

For customers, the key update is that public sector banks and Regional Rural Banks will provide normal services on Sunday, September 27. Banking services may still be affected during the proposed strike from September 28 to 30.
