Massive Landslide Blocks Teesta in North Sikkim, High Alert Issued
A massive landslide in North Sikkim has partially blocked the Teesta and Chyakong rivers, prompting authorities to issue a high alert for downstream areas.
The landslide occurred near the confluence of the two rivers in Mangan district during the intervening night of September 5 and 6. A large section of a hillside gave way near the Naga Forest area, opposite OC Bhir and close to Theng Tunnel, temporarily disrupting the natural flow of the rivers.
Teesta flow currently normal
Officials said the Teesta is currently flowing normally and no deaths or injuries have been reported. Water levels at the Sankalang and Phidang observation points are also normal, although the water has turned muddy. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
Downstream areas on alert
The administration has advised residents, workers, fishermen and motorists to stay away from the riverbanks and avoid vulnerable stretches until further assessment. Officials are particularly concerned that if the natural blockage created by the landslide fails, a sudden surge of water could move downstream toward parts of Sikkim and later affect areas of Kalimpong, Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri in West Bengal.
Police control rooms and disaster-management teams are monitoring river levels and the landslide zone as a precautionary measure.
