The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has restored the special property-tax concession for senior citizen taxpayers after the benefit remained suspended during the Assembly election period.

According to a report, the concession process resumed in the first week of September after administrative approval was cleared. More than 300 applications, including fresh requests and renewal applications, had been pending since the end of March.

Why the concession was delayed

The delay followed the imposition of the Model Code of Conduct before the Assembly elections, which prevented the civic body from issuing fresh administrative approval. There was also a difference of opinion among officials over whether the recurring statutory concession required approval during the election period.

After the elected civic board was dissolved following the change in the state administration, Smita Pandey took charge as administrator. Officials from the KMC tax department subsequently discussed the pending concession applications with the administrator, after which processing resumed.

10% concession for senior citizens

Under KMC rules, taxpayers aged 60 years or above are eligible for a 10% special concession on property tax. For retired members of the armed forces, the concession is 25%. Applicants must follow the prescribed procedure and submit the required documents.

Once approved, the senior-citizen concession remains available for three consecutive years. A fresh renewal application is required after that period. Applications that were held up during the election period are now being processed along with new requests and renewal cases.

Other property-tax rebates

Separate rebates may also apply when property tax is paid within the prescribed period, while online payment can provide an additional rebate under applicable rules. KMC officials have advised applicants to ensure that age, taxpayer details, tax records and supporting documents are properly verified.
