ED Arrests Businessman Amit Gangopadhyay in Land-Grabbing Case, Cites Non-Cooperation
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested construction businessman Amit Gangopadhyay in connection with a case involving alleged land grabbing and illegal construction in parts of south Kolkata.
According to the report, Gangopadhyay was summoned to the ED office on Tuesday for questioning in the case. Investigators said he was arrested after allegedly not cooperating with the investigation.
Background to the case
Gangopadhyay is known as being close to former Trinamool Congress MLA Debashish Kumar. Police had registered multiple FIRs in 2023 over allegations including land grabbing, cheating and forged documents. The ED subsequently began a separate investigation based on those cases.
The report said the ED had carried out searches at several locations in March, before the Assembly election, and questioned Debashish Kumar several times in April. Searches were also conducted at his residence and office.
The allegations described in the report remain part of an ongoing investigation and should not be treated as established criminal liability unless determined by a court.
