Landslide damage at Takdah Cantonment Hospital in Darjeeling

A major landslide struck Takdah Cantonment Hospital in Darjeeling early Friday morning amid persistent rain in the hills. A section of the slope collapsed onto the hospital, sending large rocks and debris through part of the building.

Six people were trapped inside the affected section, including patients' relatives and hospital staff. Five managed to get out after debris was cleared, while one person was trapped under rocks and concrete debris. Rescue teams recovered him and he was later shifted to Darjeeling District Hospital for treatment.

Takdah Cantonment Hospital is a key government health centre in the Rangli Rangliot block, around 28 kilometres from Darjeeling town. The landslide also damaged part of the hospital building, while the district administration is monitoring the situation.

Darjeeling has been experiencing continuous rain and strong winds over the past few days. Initial assessments indicate that the prolonged rain may have triggered the landslide. The safety of other patients at the hospital is also being reviewed.
